Mayor E. Kirk Rivers Bio

The Honorable E. Kirk Rivers is Mayor of Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

 

Mayor Rivers is a proud graduate of Northeastern High School (Class of 1992), Elizabeth City State University (Class of 1996) and Fayetteville Technical Community College (Class of 1998). A true entrepreneur, he firmly believes economics holds the key to improving our communities.

 

Prior to his tenure as mayor, Mayor Rivers served on the Elizabeth City Council for 10 years (1997-2007). In 2022, he was proud to be elected to his first term as mayor of his hometown of Elizabeth City, NC. He was re-elected to a second term in 2023.

 

Mayor Rivers has a passion for being visible and accessible to his citizens, including the youth and students of the community, creating safe neighborhoods, and building strong and vibrant economic business districts. He is proud to call Elizabeth City the Harbor of Hospitality for all people.

 

Mayor Rivers has implemented numerous initiatives, which will better serve the City of Elizabeth City. You will often hear him say, “When you look to the sky in Northeastern North Carolina, you will see a rising star and that star is Elizabeth City.”

 

Mayor Rivers is married to the love of his life, Nina Griffin Rivers, and is the proud father of two sons, Drew and Devin Spence. He lives by the motto, “Service is the rent we pay on Earth.”
